Programma del viaggio
Lunedì 12/3
    Ritrovo h. 6,20 in Stazione Centrale Mi – atrio superiore, partenza per Firenze h. 6,45 con treno intercity. Arrivo previsto per le 10:21. Sistemazione in albergo e pranzo oppure, prima di pranzo, visita al Museo del Bargello, possibile solo entro le 13 del lunedì.
    Pomeriggio: inizio visita del centro storico: Santa Maria Novella, elegante esempio di gotico toscano, per via della Scala al Duomo, Santa Maria del Fiore, il cuore di Firenze, ricoperto di marmi policromi e sormontato dalla grandiosa cupola del Brunelleschi; accanto, il Campanile di Giotto e il Battistero dedicato a San Giovanni, ornato dalle porte bronzee e dorate dei Pisano e del Ghiberti. Rientro in albergo per la cena presso il ristorante convenzionato. Dopo cena, passeggiata ai Lungarni e Ponte Vecchio.

Martedì 13/3    Mattino: Piazza della Signoria, con Palazzo Vecchio, fatto costruire da Cosimo I De Medici, secondo duca di Firenze e primo granduca di Toscana, che governò dal 1537 al 1574 promuovendo l’arte e lo sviluppo architettonico e urbanistico della città, come testimoniano la Loggia dei Lanzi, il corridoio Vasariano e l’adiacente palazzo degli Uffizi, che ospitava la burocrazia dell’epoca. Se praticabile, visita al celeberrimo Museo degli Uffizi, la più ricca collezione di pittura italiana tra il ‘200 e l‘800. In alternativa, al Museo dell’Accademia dove è custodito l’originale del David di Michelangelo e altri interessanti opere d’arte. Intervallo pranzo. Prosecuzione visita centro storico, all’esterno degli imponenti palazzi Strozzi e Medici-Riccardi, di san Lorenzo, con le cappelle medicee e le statue michelangiolesche, fino a Piazza dell’Annunziata e all’Ospitale degli Innocenti.
Dopocena passeggiata in zona Santa Croce, cuore della movida fiorentina.

Mercoledì 14/3    Mattino: Oltrarno, in fiorentino detto anche Diladdarno, è la zona di Firenze posta sulla sponda sinistra del fiume Arno. Parte integrante del Centro Storico di Firenze, comprendente rioni celebri come Santo Spirito e San Frediano. La Basilica di Santo Spirito, Palazzo Pitti, il Giardino di Boboli insieme alle botteghe degli artigiani, orafi, restauratori fanno dell'Oltrarno la zona di Firenze dove ancora vive la fiorentinità e dove nelle strette strade si vive il vero spirito rinascimentale di Firenze.
Visita a Palazzo Pitti e giardini di Boboli. Tempo permettendo, pranzo al sacco al parco del Belvedere. Visita ragionata alla shopping fiorentino. Cena. Serata in zona Santa croce o, tempo permettendo, giro in collina.

Giovedì 15/3    Visita all’interno di Santa Croce, con le tombe e i cenotafi degli italiani illustri, e il suggestivo chiostro. Sosta per il pranzo. H. 14.00 rientro in albergo per ritiro bagaglio e spostamento in stazione per la partenza (autobus 2, 5’) alle h 15:39 da Firenze, Rifredi. Arrivo a Milano centrale alle h19:15.

L’ATMOSFERA DELLA CITTA’
Se come nel film di Troisi e Benigni si potesse tornare indietro nella Toscana a cavallo tra 1400 e 1500, si potrebbero incontrare per le strade di Firenze, Brunelleschi e Masaccio, Donatello e Michelangelo, Lorenzo il Magnifico e il Savonarola, ognuno a fare la propria parte di architetto, pittore, scultore, principe, predicatore, per trasformare questa piccola cittadina in riva all'Arno in un capolavoro, la "Culla del Rinascimento". Firenze, che era già una città ricca, amante della bellezza e della cultura, diventa un nuovo modello per "l'Uomo Nuovo" che usciva dal Medioevo. In pochi chilometri, per volontà di principi illuminati e artisti geniali, cominciarono a sorgere chiese, palazzi, musei, ponti. Nelle botteghe si dipingevano opere che oggi impreziosiscono musei di tutto il mondo e che avrebbero cambiato per sempre la storia dell'arte, ma anche l’estetica, il gusto, in sintesi, la cultura occidentale.
Oggi questi luoghi d’arte vivono intensamente grazie al richiamo turistico della città e rappresentano per i Fiorentini il cuore storico e l’orgoglio della città, che – a partire dal XIX° secolo, sia nel territorio urbano che nelle zone limitrofe di prato, Bagno a Ripoli, Rifredi, diventa anche attivo centro industriale (meccanica, ottica, tessile).
Firenze è centro culturale e sede universitarie tra le più prestigiose d’Italia. Rinomata la stagione di concerti del “Maggio fiorentino”.

SHOPPING A FIRENZE
Se a Firenze sperate di fare acquisti a buon mercato, rimarrete delusi. In compenso potrete dilettarvi tra le molteplici botteghe di artigianato dove ancora si lavorano gli oggetti a mano, famose quelle degli orafi e dei gioiellieri. Molto rinomati anche i laboratori in cui si producono oggetti in pelle e in cuoio e in cui si lavora la carta. Non mancano i negozi di alta moda: nel centro, lungo Via dei Calzaiuoli e dei Tornabuoni potrete trovare i negozi di Armani, Gucci e Versace e di tutte le prestigiose firme del made in Italy. Molto scenografici, ma ormai ridotti a trappole per turisti, sono i mercatini storici, in particolare quello Nuovo e quello di San Lorenzo: di mercato popolare hanno ormai solo l'aspetto, mentre i prezzi sono quelli da botteghe di lusso.

La Basilica di Santa Croce
Santa Croce come luogo di cittadinanza
La tomba di Michelangelo, "protetto" da tre sculture che rappresentano Pittura, Scultura e Architettura, si contende la prima parte della Basilica di Santa Croce con la tomba di Galileo Galilei, posta proprio di fronte. Subito dopo Michelangelo c'è il cenotafio di Dante ma non le sue spoglie, lasciate a Ravenna dove morì in esilio. Seguono Vittorio Alfieri, Antonio Canova, Niccolò Machiavelli, Gioacchino Rossini e Ugo Foscolo, che definì Santa Croce come luogo che conservava le "Urne dei Forti" (le tombe dei grandi d'Italia). Ma Santa Croce non è solo una "raccolta" di spoglie degli italiani che hanno fatto la storia. In fondo alla basilica ci sono le cappelle affrescate da Giotto con le Storie della Vita di San Francesco. Nella Cappella dei Pazzi, dove Giuliano de Medici venne ucciso e Lorenzo il Magnifico ferito durante la famosa congiura, è conservato il Crocifisso di Cimabue.
Di grande interesse anche la grande piazza antistante, con la statua del Poeta e i bei palazzi Cocchi e dell’Antella, affrescato con scena di vita fiorentina: fin dalla sua origine fu teatro di feste, riunioni e celebrazioni cittadine. In particolare già dal Trecento e soprattutto nel Quattrocento vi si svolsero giostre e tornei a cavallo: i più celebri sono quello del 1469 per festeggiare il fidanzamento di Lorenzo de' Medici con Clarice Orsini e la giostra del 1475 di Giuliano de' Medici in onore di Simonetta Vespucci, celebrata dal Poliziano nel poema Stanze per la giostra.
Dalla fine del XV secolo la Piazza viene prescelta per il giuoco del Calcio. Due dischi di marmo, murati nel 1565 nella facciata del Palazzo dell'Antella e del palazzo di fronte, segnavano la metà del campo di gioco. La partita cominciava quando il pallone, lanciato dall'arbitro o "pallaio", contro uno di quei marmi (detti appunto "battipalla"), rimbalzava nel campo. Memorabile è la partita giocata da un gruppo di giovani fiorentini all'epoca dell'Assedio di Firenze da parte delle truppe imperiali, nel 1530: per essere visti dai nemici e in segno di spregio, i giocatori si vestirono in livrea. Dal 1865 al 1978 il gioco del calcio subisce un'interruzione poiché al centro della piazza venne collocata la statua di Dante Alighieri, poi spostata nella posizione attuale dopo l'alluvione del 1966 lo spostamento della scultura ha fatto sì che la piazza sia tornata ad essere campo di un gioco molto sentito tra i fiorentini dei quartieri del centro storico.

Palazzo Vecchio – Piazza della Signoria
La prima cosa che colpisce di Palazzo Vecchio è l'impossibilità di fotografarlo per intero. Anche se andate verso la parte più lontana di Piazza della Signoria, all'incrocio con Via dei Calzaiuoli, non riuscirete a prenderlo tutto. Il fatto è che non si può fare a meno di fotografarlo, visto che è considerato il miglior esempio di architettura civile trecentesca del mondo. Quello che gli impedisce di rientrare tutto in uno scatto è la "Torre di Arnolfo", alta 94 metri e costruita verso il 1310, che porta sulla vetta la grande bandiera con il giglio fiorentino. All'ingresso di Palazzo Vecchio fa bella mostra di sé la copia del David di Michelangelo, a guardia della All’interno, tra l’altro, la sala dei Cinquecento, affrescata E' Piazza della Signoria ad ospitare questo bellissimo palazzo, un luogo che per molto tempo è stato considerato "maledetto", perché terreno di scontro tra Guelfi e Ghibellini. Cancellate le orme di un passato sanguinoso, Piazza della Signoria è adesso il centro della vita sociale, civile e politica di tutti i cittadini, italiani e stranieri, di Firenze e luogo d’incrocio delle migliaia di turisti che ogni giorno visitano la città.
Il Salone dei Cinquecento è la sala più grande e più importante sotto il profilo storico-artistico. Questa sala imponente ha una lunghezza di 54 metri, una larghezza di 23 e un'altezza di 18 metri. È la più grande sala in Italia realizzata per la gestione del potere civile. Fu costruita in un solo anno, il 1494, da Simone del Pollaiolo, detto il Cronaca, e Francesco di Domenico su commissione di Girolamo Savonarola. Il frate ferrarese, di fatto il signore di Firenze, dopo la morte di Lorenzo il Magnifico e la cacciata di suo figlio Pieronel 1492, e fu promotore di una riforma in senso popolare e plebiscitario delle istituzioni della Repubblica di Firenze, affinché nessun altro potesse accentrare il potere nelle sue mani attraverso uomini di fiducia, come avevano fatto Cosimo il Vecchio, Lorenzo il Magnifico e come aveva provato a fare suo figlio Piero. Savonarola allora dispose che fosse creato il Consiglio dei Cinquecento o Maggior Consiglio, formato da 500 cittadini appunto, in modo che si il potere decisionale fosse distribuito sulla popolazione, rendendolo più difficilmente controllabile da un singolo, sul modello del di Venezia.
Il frutto tangibile di queste riforme fu proprio la creazione del Salone dei Cinquecento nel palazzo governativo, che per l'epoca fu un notevolissimo sforzo ingegneristico. In linea con i principi di rigore savonaroliani, la sala era molto spartana e quasi povera. L'istituzione del Consiglio dei Cinquecento, sebbene avesse complicato la governabilità della Repubblica, rimase attiva anche dopo la fine di Savonarola, giustiziato come eretico nel 1498 in seguito alla scomunica di Papa Alessandro VI. Fu il gonfaloniere a vita Pier Soderini per primo a preoccuparsi della decorazione della sala, riuscendo ad accordarsi con i due più grandi artisti fiorentini dell'epoca, Leonardo da Vinci e Michelangelo Buonarroti, per la realizzazione di due grandi affreschi (circa 17x7 metri) per decorare le pareti della sala, con scene di battaglia che celebrassero le vittorie della Repubblica (1503).
Leonardo iniziò a realizzare la Battaglia di Anghiari, mentre a Michelangelo venne destinata un'altra porzione di parete per la Battaglia di Cascina. I due affreschi monumentali si dovevano trovare sul lato maggiore a est, ai lati del seggio del gonfaloniere, Michelangelo a sinistra e Leonardo a destra. I due geni del Rinascimento avrebbero avuto così modo di lavorare per un certo periodo faccia a faccia, ma nessuna delle loro opere fu mai completata. Entrambe le opere originali sono andate perdute, ma almeno ci sono pervenute delle copie e dei disegni preparatori.
Apoteosi di Cosimo I, soffitto
Con l'arrivo di Cosimo I de' Medici e la sua nomina imperiale a Duca di Firenze e successivamente Granduca di Toscana, Palazzo Vecchio divenne la residenza della coppia reale e della sua corte. In quel periodo il palazzo subì una radicale trasformazione, ad opera di Giorgio Vasari. Il Salone dei Cinquecento, da luogo di celebrazione della potenza della Repubblica, divenne allora il salone di rappresentanza del duca, dove egli riceveva gli ambasciatori e dava udienza al popolo.

La loggia dei Lanzi
A destra di Palazzo Vecchio e accanto agli Uffizi, i quali vi si innestano sul retro con una terrazza proprio sulla sua sommità, si trova la Loggia dei Lanzi.     Viene chiamata così perché qui vi si accamparono i Lanzichenecchi nel 1527 di passaggio verso Roma, ma anche Loggia dell'Orcagna, per via di una errata attribuzione ad Andrea di Cione, detto l’Orcagna, mentre la realizzazione dell'opera è stata documentata come di suo fratello Benci e di Simone Talenti. L'edificazione risale al periodo tra il 1376 e il 1382; la loggia serviva per ospitare al coperto le numerose assemblee pubbliche popolari e le cerimonie ufficiali della Repubblica fiorentina alla presenza del popolo, come quelle di insediamento delle signorie. Oggi, sotto le sue ampie arcate, ospita statue originali in marmo romane e rinascimentali che grande valore: il capolavoro più importante è Perseo di Benvenuto Cellini (1554), una grande statua in bronzo alta 3,20 metri compreso il piedistallo istoriato da bassorilievi di tema mitologico. Il corpo ben proporzionato e la posizione plastica di Perseo, appoggiato su una sola gamba mentre solleva con il braccio sinistro la testa di Medusa decapitata rappresentano l’eccellenza della scultura italiana rinascimentale, ma anche dell’arte orafa di cui il C. fu maestro. Ancora più complesso è il Ratto delle Sabine, capolavoro in marmo del Giambologna (1583). Del Giambologna è anche l'Ercole con il Centauro Nesso, dal sensazionale effetto di movimento espresso dal corpo in tensione del centauro sottomesso dall'eroe greco (1599). Sono sculture di epoca romana Patroclo e Menelao, copia di epoca flavia di un originale greco del 230-240 a.C.,

Palazzo del Bargello
Punto di raccordo tra il primo e il secondo nucleo del Palazzo - quello cioè su via del Proconsolo e quello su via dell'Acqua - il Cortile dugentesco si arricchì nel XIV secolo del verone e della scala. L’eleganza di questi elementi fu annullata alla fine del Cinquecento in poi, quando l'edificio divenne sede delle Carceri fiorentine e occorrevano maggiori spazi per l'esercizio della giustizia. Il successivo restauro del Mazzei (1859 - 1865) cercò di recuperare le caratteristiche originarie: il rinnovato pozzo, al posto del patibolo, e i vari stemmi dei Podestà e dei Giudici di ruota che dal Tre al Cinquecento abitarono nell'edificio, nonché le insegne dei quartieri e dei sestieri della città scolpite in pietra e colorite, sulle pareti sotto i loggiati. A questi ultimi volevano intonarsi i gonfaloni dei quartieri e alcuni stemmi dei podestà, dipinti nelle volte da Gaetano Bianchi, nel corso del restauro ottocentesco.
Gli ampi spazi del porticato hanno accolto sin dai primi anni di vita del museo sculture di provenienze diverse. Il pezzo più antico è un Sarcofago romano decorato con due delfini, un tempo posto all’esterno del palazzo ed usato come vasca di fontana. Al Trecento risalgono una Pila acquasantiera in marmo del 1302, proveniente da Santa Maria Novella, e la Madonna con i santi Pietro e Paolo, monumentali figure che erano sulla Porta Romana. Più tardi sono invece i due Leoni, pure in pietra.
Il Quattrocento è rappresentato da un gruppo di Sei musici assemblati all’Incoronazione di Ferdinando I d’Aragona, tutti attribuiti a Benedetto da Maiano e da una statua di Alfonso d’Aragona di Francesco Laurana.    Tra le opere più rilevanti del Cinquecento sono la monumentale statua dell’Oceano del Giambologna, proveniente dall’Isolotto nel giardino di Boboli, dove è oggi una copia, e le figure allegoriche della incompiuta fontana di Bartolomeo Ammannati (Giunone, la Terra, i fiumi Arno e Arbia, la Prudenza, Firenze e due Pavoni) , che avrebbe dovuto essere collocata nel Salone dei Cinquecento in Palazzo Vecchio. Dallo stesso luogo proviene il ritratto di Cosimo I “. L’opera più moderna, l’unica che rappresenta la scultura dell’Ottocento al Bargello, è la vivace figura del Pescatore (1877) in bronzo di Vincenzo Gemito, che si riallaccia al naturalismo quattrocentesco.

La Galleria degli Uffizi
Con l'insediamento del duca Cosimo I de' Medici nell'antica sede comunale di Palazzo Vecchio, iniziò la politica d'esaltazione della monarchia all'interno del perimetro cittadino. Nel 1560 il duca volle riunire le 13 più importanti magistrature fiorentine, dette uffici e collocate in precedenza in varie sedi, in un unico edificio posto sotto la sua diretta sorveglianza, in modo da affiancare al vecchio Palazzo della Signoria una nuova sede governativa, consona alla potenza politica e militare acquisita da Firenze dopo la conquista di Siena. Il luogo scelto per la nuova costruzione fu un lembo di terra fra il lato meridionale di piazza della Signoria e il lungarno, in un quartiere popolare dove si trovava il porto fluviale di Firenze.
I lavori furono affidati a Giorgio Vasari che già si occupava del cantiere dell'adiacente Palazzo Vecchio. Il progetto prevedeva un edificio a foggia di "U", costituito da un braccio lungo a levante, da incorporarsi con l'antica chiesa romanica di San Pier Scheraggio, da un tratto breve affacciato sul fiume Arno e da un braccio corto a ponente, inglobando la Zecca Vecchia.       Nel nuovo edificio dovevano essere collocati gli uffici di tredici importanti Magistrature che regolavano l'amministrazione dello Stato mediceo; sul lato di Palazzo Vecchio, dall'antica chiesa di San Pier Scheraggio si successero: i Nove Conservatori del Dominio e della Giurisdizione fiorentina, l'Arte dei Mercatanti, l'Arte del Cambio, l'Arte della Seta, l'Arte dei Medici e Speziali, l'Università dei Fabbricanti e il Tribunale della Mercanzia; dalla parte opposta gli Ufficiali dell'Onestà, le Decime e Vendite, gli Ufficiali della Grascia, il Magistrato dei Pupilli, i Conservatori di Leggi e i Commissari delle Bande[2].
Il Museo ospitato nelle sue sale è una superba raccolta di opere d'arte inestimabili, derivanti, come nucleo fondamentale, dalle collezioni dei Medici, arricchite nei secoli da lasciti, scambi e donazioni, tra cui spicca un fondamentale gruppo di opere religiose derivate dalle soppressioni di monasteri e conventi tra il XVIII e il XIX secolo.         Divisa in varie sale allestite per scuole e stili in ordine cronologico, l'esposizione mostra opere dal XII al XVIII secolo, con la migliore collezione al mondo di opere della scuola toscana, e fiorentina in particolare, che permette di apprezzare lo sviluppo dal gotico al Rinascimento fino al manierismo, da Cimabue a Michelangelo, passando per Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci e Raffaello. Senza pari è la raccolta di opere di Sandro Botticelli. Ben rappresentate, con autentici capolavori, sono anche le altre scuole italiane ed europee (Mantegna, Tiziano, Parmigianino, Dürer, Rubens, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Canaletto, ecc.). Di grande pregio sono anche la collezione di statuaria antica e quella dei disegni.

Palazzo Pitti, che è stato anticamente la residenza dei granduchi di Toscana e in seguito dei re d’Italia, ospita ora diverse importanti collezioni di dipinti e sculture, oggetti d’arte, porcellane e una galleria del costume, oltre ad offrire un ambiente storico magnificamente conservato, che si estende al giardino di Boboli, uno tra i primi e più famosi giardini italiani.

Le passioni del re: Paesi, cavalli e altro a Firenze al tempo dei Savoia
Villa medicea della Petraia – MOSTRA prorogata al 04-03-2012
La villa della Petraia, che più di altre residenze medicee rispecchia nella sistemazione degli interni la presenza dei Savoia a Firenze, ospita nell'anno delle celebrazioni dei centocinquanta anni dell'Unità d'Italia, una piccola mostra dedicata al periodo in cui fu abitata da Vittorio Emanuele II e da Rosa Vercellana, contessa di Mirafiore. L'occasione espositiva dà la possibilità di indagare tramite dipinti, arredi, oggetti e documenti, la vita privata del re sullo sfondo delle trasformazioni storiche dell'Italia e di Firenze, che passava al ruolo di capitale.
I dipinti di Paesaggio acquistati alla prima Esposizione Nazionale, tenutasi proprio a Firenze nel 1861, mostrano da un lato le scelte fatte dal re per l’appartamento privato alla Meridiana di Palazzo Pitti, e dall'altro restituiscono il volto variegato di un paese unito, dalle Alpi alle Marine dell'isola d'Elba, alla campagna laziale.
Le note passioni del re per la caccia e per gli animali si ripercorrono, nel suo rifugio preferito della Petraia, attraverso gli acquerelli dei cavalli prediletti, fra i quali alcuni partecipi delle battaglie militari per l'indipendenza.
Questi dipinti erano parte dell'arredo del Gabinetto del re alle nuove Scuderie di Porta Romana - corrispondenti all’attuale Istituto d’arte - unico intervento edilizio di rilievo effettivamente realizzato a Firenze in epoca sabauda, su progetto di architetti regi piemontesi e sul modello della tenuta della Mandria di Venaria Reale, prima del trasferimento della capitale a Roma.
La varietà di tipologie degli oggetti esposti consente inoltre di ricostruire questo periodo della storia di Firenze attraverso i segni materiali offerti anche da oggetti d'arte applicata che aprono verso aspetti meno noti del collezionismo e del gusto sabaudo, come quello dell'interesse del re per i volatili e per i cavalli. Elementi entrambi che giustificano la diffusione dell'immagine del re galantuomo, ritratto nella quotidianità degli abiti da caccia.
Attraverso i documenti, si ripercorrono infine i preparativi relativi alle nozze tra Emanuele di Mirafiore, figlio del re e della “Bella Rosina”, con Blanche de Larderel, la cui festa di fidanzamento si tenne alla Petraia il primo settembre 1872. La copertura in ferro e vetro tramite la quale il bellissimo cortile affrescato venne trasformato in salone da ballo, costituisce tuttora il più significativo richiamo a quell'avvenimento.

Stage in Gran Bretagna - programma e condizioni

Il soggiorno si svolgerà presso il centro di Conlan School ad Abergele nel Galles del Nord. Abergele si trova nella Contea di Conwy, ha una popolazione di 12.000 abitanti, è situata sulla costa nel Galles del Nord, distante 56 chilometri da Chester e circa 100 chilometri da Manchester e Liverpool. La splendida posizione offre agli studenti la possibilità di usufruire delle varie attrazioni che la costa, la campagna e le “rotonde” colline Gallese offrono. Conwy è conosciuta in tutto il mondo per il suo splendido Castello Medievale, considerato World Heritage Site.

Il programma di una settimana prevede:
- Programma didattico di 20 lezioni settimanali di 45 min ciascuna – in gruppi studio massimo 15 studenti ciascuno
- Sistemazione in famiglia (2 studenti per famiglia) con pensione completa (packed lunch per il pranzo)
- Materiale didattico
- Certificato di fine corso
- 2 gite di mezza giornata con nostro accompagnatore: alcune destinazioni sono: la località balneare Llandudno, il castello e la cittadina di Conwy, la città romana Chester, il castello di Bodelwyddan, ed altre similari)

- Qualora, per motivi di forza maggiore, il gruppo di studenti non intendesse più usufruire del servizio prenotato, con la accettazione della presente offerta, la Società Conlan LtD avrà diritto di ritenere, senza altra comunicazione, la caparra confirmatoria versata con la accettazione della presente offerta; e qualora la rinuncia venga espressa entro il 30° giorno antecedente la data di partenza prevista, ricevere una ulteriore penale pari al 20% del prezzo complessivo.

Friends, comrades and fellow South Africans.
I greet you all in the name of peace, democracy and freedom for all.

Roger & Me
Moore first became famous for his 1989 film, Roger & Me, a documentary about what happened to Flint, Michigan after General Motors closed its factories and opened new ones in Mexico, where the workers were paid much less. Since then Moore has been known as a critic of the neoliberal view of globalization. "Roger" is Roger B. Smith, former CEO and president of General Motors.

Pets or Meat: The Return to Flint
(1992) is a short (23-minute) documentary film that was aired on PBS. It is based on the feature-length film Roger & Me (1989) by Michael Moore. The film's title refers to Rhonda Britton, a Flint, Michigan, resident featured in both the 1989 and 1992 films who sells rabbits as either pets or meat.[citation needed]

Canadian Bacon
In 1995, Moore released a satirical film, Canadian Bacon, which features a fictional US president (played by Alan Alda) engineering a fake war with Canada in order to boost his popularity. It is noted for containing a number of Canadian and American stereotypes, and for being Moore's only non-documentary film. The film is also one of the last featuring Canadian-born actor John Candy, and also features a number of cameos by other Canadian actors. In the film, several potential enemies for America's next great campaign are discussed by the president and his cabinet. (The scene was strongly influenced by the Stanley Kubrick film Dr. Strangelove.) The President comments that declaring war on Canada was as ridiculous as declaring war on international terrorism. His military adviser, played by Rip Torn, quickly rebuffs this idea, saying that no one would care about "... a bunch of guys driving around blowing up rent-a-cars."

The Big One
In 1997, Moore directed The Big One, which documents the tour publicizing his book Downsize This! Random Threats from an Unarmed American, in which he criticizes mass layoffs despite record corporate profits. Among others, he targets Nike for outsourcing shoe production to Indonesia.

Bowling for Columbine
Moore's 2002 film, Bowling for Columbine, probes the culture of guns and violence in the United States, taking as a starting point the Columbine High School massacre of 1999. Bowling for Columbine won the Anniversary Prize at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival[22] and France's Cesar Award as the Best Foreign Film. In the United States, it won the 2002 Academy Award for Documentary Feature. It also enjoyed great commercial and critical success for a film of its type and became, at the time, the highest-grossing mainstream-released documentary (a record now held by Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11). It was praised by some for illuminating a subject slighted by the mainstream media, but it was attacked by others who considered it inaccurate and misleading in its presentations and suggested interpretations of events.

Fahrenheit 9/11
Fahrenheit 9/11 examines America in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, particularly the record of the Bush administration and alleged links between the families of George W. Bush and Osama bin Laden. Fahrenheit was awarded the Palme d'Or, the top honor at the Cannes Film Festival; it was the first documentary film to win the prize since 1956. Moore later announced that Fahrenheit 9/11 would not be in consideration for the 2005 Academy Award for Documentary Feature, but instead for the Academy Award for Best Picture. He stated he wanted the movie to be seen by a few million more people, preferably on television, by election day. Since November 2 was less than nine months after the film's release, it would be disqualified for the Documentary Oscar.[clarification needed] Moore also said he wanted to be supportive of his "teammates in non-fiction film." However, Fahrenheit received no Oscar nomination for Best Picture. The title of the film alludes to the classic book Fahrenheit 451 about a future totalitarian state in which books are banned; according to the book, paper begins to burn at 451 degrees Fahrenheit. The pre-release subtitle of the film confirms the allusion: "The temperature at which freedom burns." At the box office, Fahrenheit 9/11 remains the highest-grossing documentary of all time, taking in over US$200 million worldwide, including United States box office revenue of almost US$120 million.[3]
Sicko
Moore directed this film about the American health care system, focusing particularly on the managed-care and pharmaceutical industries. At least four major pharmaceutical companies—Pfizer, Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca, and GlaxoSmithKline—ordered their employees not to grant any interviews to Moore.[23][24][25] According to Moore on a letter at his website, "roads that often surprise us and lead us to new ideas – and challenge us to reconsider the ones we began with have caused some minor delays." The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on 19 May 2007, receiving a lengthy standing ovation, and was released in the U.S. and Canada on 29 June 2007.[26] The film was the subject of some controversy when it became known that Moore went to Cuba with chronically ill September 11th rescue workers to shoot parts of the film. The United States is looking into whether this violates the trade embargo. The film is currently ranked the third highest grossing documentary of all time[3] and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature.[27]
Captain Mike Across America
[28] Moore takes a look at the politics of college students in what he calls "Bush Administration America" with this film shot during Moore's 60-city college campus tour in the months leading up to the 2004 election.[29][30] The film was later re-edited by Moore into Slacker Uprising.

Capitalism: A Love Story
On September 23, 2009, Moore released a new movie titled Capitalism: A Love Story, which looks at the financial crisis of 2007–2009 and the U.S. economy during the transition between the incoming Obama Administration and the outgoing Bush Administration. Addressing a press conference at its release, Moore said, "Democracy is not a spectator sport, it's a participatory event. If we don't participate in it, it ceases to be a democracy. So Obama will rise or fall based not so much on what he does but on what we do to support him."
